CLAY SOPER MEMORIAL WEEKEND CHAMPIONSHIP
MORE THAN JUST A POINTS RACE
On March 11, over 190 athletes from Division 1, weekend racers, ski clubs, and college racers came together to celebrate their personal best. This year's slalom race, as in years past, was about skiing fast, sharing laughs, and coming together for the love of ski racing. The event is known for its inspection cookies, race time music, bib-draw swag, and low-point start list. There was jubilation from racers and the crowd as the top three athletes in Division 1 and the Weekend Division stepped up to the podium to receive their awards.
Hunter Brayton, the men's overall winner, best described this year's race, "It always means a lot to me to go back to Waterville Valley and the Clay Soper Memorial Weekend Championship Race. I knew Clay, and it's a way I can remember him. The race is different because everyone is happy. Usually, at races, a few people are upset with how they skied, the course set, or for some other reason, but everyone is always in a good mood at the Memorial Race. The race environment is very upbeat and positive."
